Coule o' Finishing touches, and Questions
First off, I cant seem to Get the TV cable to adjust properly, If I follow the procedure detailed in the tech article, It Still shifts really early at WOT.
Does it need to come out more, or back more when this is the case ?
Secondly, If I am going to swap a guy from TPI to carb ( he will give me all his old TPI **** if I do, woohoo! ) I need what, Carb, manifold, Dist, AFPR ( or can I just use a mech pump and turn the elec pump off ? )
Will a 86 Lb9 Have a lobe for the mech pump on the Cam ?
What other problems WIll I run into, keep in mind htis guy is a ***** hits the Camaro Scene, he just thinkgs TPI sucks and wants carb, So Ill give it too him ( muehahaha )
So long term ill effects arent a concern. I Figure Ill Tell him I will promise him it works For 3 months or So as part of the deal, Or I will fix it again free.
lastly, When Putting my brakes back together the last time, I did somethign stupid.
I had my cousin depress and hold the pedal while one caliper was just sitting, No pads and no Rotor ( was bleeding the other side, oops! )
So the damn piston popped out of the caliper.
How Do I put this damn thing back togehter ? I havent looked at it incredibly closely yet, But My few attempts to press it back In were unsucessful.
Thanks for any advice/info You can Offer.

Too much here LOL
Sounds like the TV cable might be bad if you are doing it properly. Basically, you push the button in, push the plastic retainer into the housing, let the button go, and then open the throttle to adjust it. You can adjust this by hand to fine tune it as long as the cable is not tighter (doesnt work, will always loosen up) and go from there. For some reason I cant remember but seems to me when its loose it shifts late... maybe the cable is worn out.
Carb, mani, dist, afpr, air filter
, some sort of hookup for the tv cable and throttle, and use a pressure switch to keep the torque converter lockup working, I would hate to see anyones trans burn up due to lack of the stock lockup feature. Speedo could present a problem, tho I never got that far.
Yep, lobe is there.
It will get beat by ricers
I think you have it about covered.
Pistons are hard to put back in. Make sure the seal is in correct and not twisted around (seen this alot) and CAREFULLY put it back in using a vise or similar, making sure the piston is square in the bore. Otherwise it will scratch, lock, tear the seal, something, and then it wont work right. If it doesnt go, dont force it. That just means its not lined up right. Keep in mind new calipers arent real expensive too

Max...
The lobe might be there, but is there a provision on the manifold for the mechanical fuel pump?? I don't see one on mine unless it's somewhere else....
Also, you can go get one of those piston insertion tools for getting the piston back in the caliper for about 8 bucks at any auto parts store, and you are right, those seals are very easy to mess up. Guess I got lucky when I did mine for the first time a few months ago.

Bort,
First, the 305 in my '86 has the pump block off plate, so I'm assuming you could mount a mechanical pump there. You probably will need to get a pump push rod, though. I'm betting there isn't one in there right now. Overall, it might be just as easy to install an FPR and forget the mechanical pump. Your call. You'd need the oil pressure switch for the in-tank pump, but won't need to worry about the two-second pump run from the ECM on start-up since the carb bowls will be full.
Next, the cam has the pump lobe, and I'm presuming it is hardened like the rest of the lobes.
Third, you will likely have some wiring differences between the TPI harness and the carb setup. You'll have to install a different sensor for the cooling fan relay, since the ECM won't be running that any more. An AutoMeter 3246 (203°-187°) sensor is just about right for the application, and is about twenty bucks in the ½NPT size. Just jump it to the same wiring as in the AC pressure switch harness.
The EGR and EVAP will probably have to be completely vacuum with no solenoid from the ECM.
As for your popped caliper piston, was it a front or rear?

Thanks Guys.

Looks like in about a Month Im gonna be doing the swap for this guy, Good ole Cast Iron manifold w/ some silver paint, a mech qjet, a junkyard Dist and this extra Mech pump should suffice to get him on the road. I figure that with an increase in initial timing and removal of smog EQ, he will feel enough SOTP increase to think Im the next ligenfilter.
And then I will proceed to never deal with him again...
