Compatibility question about the whole steering column dilemma
Compatibility question about the whole steering column dilemma
I need to replace my steering column on my '86 Camaro.
I found an '83 Camaro -> Would the steering column from that one fit right in where mine is supposed to go?
Or is another year closer to a match?
The '83 has a lever beside the lock to release the key, mine does not... SO the columns are not exactly... But I just need to know out of what year camaro do I need to get a new steering column from.
Thanks///

Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
The wiring for the windshield wipers is in a different configuration. The 82 and 83 are different from the 84-up. I ran into this problem when swapping an 84 Z28 column into my 83SC. It was just a matter of swapping around the wires in one connector to make them work properly.

There lever is for a manual transmission car. I never understood why they put it there though! Other than the wiring issue, it would work. If your wiper switch is good, you could change it, and not have to deal with the wiring issue.

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand. (Man, those Fast-Burn heads sitting on it look good!)
Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

Tec,
There were more '86 'F' bodies built than any other year. I would think you would have little trouble finding an exact replacement.
