breakin paranoia

Welp, I broke in my flat tappet cam as according to the instructions that my engine manufacturer gave me (15 minute at 1500-2500 RPM) did all that with a few issues, but all turned out well.

I have it timed, idling, and sounding real nice. EXCEPT for now i have a slight ticking noise (sounds like a card on a bicycle wheel) both cylinder banks have it, but it seems a bit more pronounced on the drivers side valve cover.

I checked for exhaust leaks (tightened the bolts down more, and looked at the gaskets...all seems well)

Some are telling me it is because of improper break in, but the thing had assembly lube on it, and i broke it like I said above...

Could it just be out of adjustment? Lash?

thanks.

What type of cam is it? How was the lash initially set?

Sorry, here is the engine info

350/360HP
9 to 1 compression

Hydralic Flat tappet camshaft .480" valve lift 230 duration @ .050" Advertised duration 286 Ground on a 108 Lobe center.

76cc Heads with 2.02" Int./ 1.600" ex. valves 1.250" high Performance valve springs

That should be enough me thinks

The lash was initially set by the guys that built the engine, as far as the little instructions booklet says. It also said that I may need to do it after breakin, but im not sure...I just wanna be sure that that is what the noise is, and not something else.

As I said, the car idles great, sounds great, and doesn't bog, the only problem is the ticking noise.

Cheers and thanks

Ive done it without them w/o much trouble. I guess it depends on the motor. Just make sure to put something down under the car and work quickly. When its warm oil will spill over the rear of the cylinder heads since the covers arnt there to contain it.

welp, its got a high volume oil pump in it, so I would imagine it would probably squirt quite a bit.....I listened to it again to see where it was coming from with the tube, its definately not exhaust leak. It sounds like its coming from either under the valve covers, or right where the covers mean the intake manifold. Again, its on both sides, and the entire bank,so I have a hard time imagining that I screwed up every lobe on the cam, and that i have all the lifters messed up, cause this car runs too damned well, and idles very nicely. Perfect start when cold too.

The only odd thing i do notice is that it the engine warms up pretty danged fast.

Cheers and thanks

I would relash the rockers and drive it for a while. It isnt uncommon at all to have to relash the rockers. Just watch it.
