Why does this happen??

When my transmission was empty of fluid, it would not shift into any gear except reverse. 1/2 full of fluid, it would shift into 2nd, 4th, and Reverse. Full, it shifts into all gears. Why is that?? It just seems weird to me.

basically it's how the fluid is routed in the trans and how it fills and what it fills first. it's really a bad idea to not have the proper level of fluid in the trans.

An automatic trans works on fluid pressure, not enough fluid there wont be enough pressure to engage all the clutches.
