What are signs of engine trouble?

My engine has been running great for years now and I maintain it very well but it has high miles, what are some signs, if any obvious, of bad wear, or possible blowing up. I am just curious, my car doesnt burn much oil and I try to keep it pretty cool, she still runs great. Thanks!

When your engine fits loosly into a 5 gallon bucket.

Reall though, watch for burning oil excessivly and/or loosing coolant but no leak.

leaks, oil/coolent lose and consumption, hard to start, parts falling off, strange ticking noises relative to engine speed, poor idle, poor acceleration or pulling power, low compression
