where to start? vacuum problems, wiring stuff..

hey guys i just bought an 86 iroc z28, at a really great price. the body is immaculate, in perfect condition, but someone did a motor swap and it has a ton of problems mechanically. i really need some help with this guys, if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it.

(1) a readable vacuum diagram
(2)a wiring diagram an idiot can read(if there is one)
(3) very clear, large pictures of the engine bay, especially the sides of the carb and vacuum hoses.
(4)also, any opinions on whether i should keep the 350 with the electronically controlled quadrajet, or should i switch to a fuel injected or somethin like that

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, chris

Here's a hose routing sticker scan that should be close enough to work.

It would be far more cost efficient on your part to keep the q-jet and tune it to your motor. The second you get into EFI, you get into a bunch of sensors and tuning (if you want to run larger cams and pretty much larger anything). For some that's ok, for others, that;s not.

LIke i said, probably not the best option, I vote q-jet. In the carb section and in the tech articles, PLENTY of data on how to tune the q-jet can be found.

Look up some posts by a guy named "Trickster." He's got wiring diagrams and well, lots of diagrams.

As for the pictures, what exactly are you curious about? And what are these "mechanical" issues?

well, number 1 the idiot who swapped the motor from a 305 to a 350 did not cover or tie up any of the wires so about 60 percent of them are FRIED......then, the car just stumbles on itself when you hit the gas....it will idle well, and drive ok, but will not act like a 350 should at all....i had a 350 in a work truck and when you hit the gas it would put you back in your seat, this just gets louder. a lot of the sensor's are disconnected, the vacuum system is screwed...i found the canister control valve next to the canister with only one hose coming from it....the egr valve and regulator have no hoses on them at all.... for some reason from the vac sensor to the carb there was a T in the line, but no hose running from the open end of the T connector, the front brakes are so bad the rotors have groovs the width of scredriver and a half inch deep..... the automatic trunk motor quit working yesterday, found out the right front tire was full of at least 3 cans of fix a flat, instead of paying 15 dollars to have a shop put a plug in it....the exhaust has a huge whole in it right after the header. not a huge list of bad problems, just a bunch of really annoying ones that any idiot knows to take care of. if this car didnt look so good i would seriously set it on fire...

oh and when you put the car in reverse, and then go into drive(still at a very slow reverse roll) the right rear tire feels like it is running over something and makes a loud pop.

Don't set your car on fire. Trust me, it's not a fun site to see when it's done (don't ask how I know).

Just don't set it on fire.

What carb is on this now?

The best thing probably to do, obviously depending on how bad it is, is just to redo all the vacuum lines. Depending on how bad they are, either rip them all out and follow the diagram, or replacing it 1 by 1.

As for the rest of the stuff, and possibly even the vacuum lines, depending on what carb it is, if you really don't want to rewire it all, the non-computer controlled route is always available. Not too many wires involved in that.
