Hydrocarbon readings high
Hydrocarbon readings high
Heres my problem. My 5.0 TPI was rebuilt about 3 months ago and I'm finally getting around to checking my exhaust gases. anyway, when I did the rebuilt I replaced injectors, spark plugs, O2 sensor, wires, cap, coil, distributor, cat., and you name to get to original like when it was new. since, day 1 of starting car its run a little rough and had a lite miss at idle, you would not feel the miss while under load. I've even replaced the spark plugs twice and even bought delco wires and cap. today I was getting a wheel alignment and I ask to check the exhaust and this is when they saw the hydrocarbons readings high above 200 at idle. I didn't have time to let them put the car on a scope and also was going to cost me 75 bucks to continue diagnosising so I would like to see if anybody has any ideas on what the problem could be. I've been told that high HC is due to unburn (combusted)gas is this true. Help!
88,
You really should test for HC when the engine is a full operating temperature. The hotter, the better. If it is truly rich, you might consider clearing the ECM to allow new BLM fule tables to be written now that it is broken in and sealed. Your ECM inputs may have been skewed but a new, tight engine and higher coolant temperatures. It's easy and free, and can't hurt.

No surprise, Vader is right to start there. You absolutely have to be up to operating temps. Also your CO readings and NOx readings would be helpful.

When they checked the exhaust gases the car was at operating temp. and do you mean to disconnect battery to clear ecm. If so, I've beleive I cleared the ecm a couple of times due to either clearing a code or when I've had to replace a part on the engine and still the miss is there. If this is not what you are referring to then I need a little more of a explanation. Thanks for the reply.
