is this a good price for a short block

i went to a machine shop with a very good reputation and the guy said it would cost about 5grand for them to build me a short block. thats just a rough estimate. that would consist of all necessary machine work . put in all new bearings, freeze plugs, and oil gallery plugs. it would include all fully forged internals. he said that he would use what ever companies that i wanted. i told him that i want the bottom end bullit proof because im going to run nitrous. he said that he would also balance everything too. does this sound like a good price. he walked me through everything that they would be doing and they don't cut any corners. he said that they would have the motor for about a month. let me know what you guys think. also if you guys could reccommend any good forged products that would be great. thanks alot.

Sounds like a lot, you could get a complete forged engine for that.

Yeah man you could just buy a whole new engine..

What size block is it? Is it a brand new block or one you're supplying?

Sounds steep. How expensive of parts are you using?

For that price, you could get an aftermarket block, good rotating assembly, and have it assembled at a machine shop.

Unless he is blue printing an aluminum block with forged pistons and steel crank i'd call you nuts for taking him up on that

i emailed scott shafiroff about blue printing the blocks. i'll post his reply when i get it. i was also looking a bill mitchels smallblock 427. looks like a nice deal for 4500 bucks

i don't mean to sound like an idiot, but ive always heard people use the term blue printing and i never really knew what it meant exactly. could someone explain it to me.

i talked to one of the reps at scott shafiroff racing. he said that he could build me what ever i wanted. so we narrowed it down to a 406sb with about 10.5:1 compression ratio. we're going to go all forged so that i can run nitrous. i'll be using the afr heads that i have along with the victor jr intake and holley 750 double pumper. he said it would be no more than $5500 shipped to my work. i don't have the money right now but i will be placing an order in a couple of months .
