What engine is this.

What engine is the 5.0L from an 86 Pontiac station wagon? The water pump looks really strange. It has a pipe coming from the top going into the thermo housing. The oil fill is in front, built into the block. I'm not sure if this is the original engine but I think it is. Can anybody tell me what trans it is, it's a 4 speed auto.
It's also got a quadrajet ontop and truck style tall element air cleaner.

Sounds like an Olds 307. IMHO, it is horse droppings. Run from it as fast as you can. My wife had a 84 Caprice with a 305 (LG4), then when it got stolen she got a 84 LeSabre with the 307; the 2 cars were so identical it wasn't funny, except that one was 30/700 and the other 307/700; the Chevy was a better drivetrain in every way. Faster, used less gas, easier to work on, lighter, etc. The only thing the Olds motor did better was that its valve cover gaskets didn't have to be replaced as often.

Yeah I have been a faitful believer in the fact that Olds 307's are garbage since I got my first car(86 Cutlass) The things are terribly underpowered, there are absolutely NO aftermarket parts for them(that I have ever found) and they sound like dogpoo. Every higher mileage Olds 307 motor I have heard sounds like a diesel because the valves think they are woodpeckers and the lifters tap like there's no tomorrow. Run from that motor, quick!

don't bother, 307's are dogs. The trans could be a 200 metric, in which case it's going to explode. I have an 84 cutlass w/ a 307 and it has a th350 b/c it went through 3 200m's in two years. If you are going to use a BOP engine use a 455.

Well, I have a friend who had an 84 Olds 98 Regency with an overdrive tranny in it and it would get up and go, he could smoke the tires if he just punched it sitting at a stoplight. That car was reliable too. And he averaged 22 mpg. It went to 192,000 miles without a rebuild before he sold it. That car is still going BTW. And my grandfather has an 84 Olds 88 with the 307 in it and it seems to have decent pickup for what it is. I don't know of any other decent olds engines though, and they do sound like crap. My friend's 98 had a glass pack on it and it sounded pretty good. Oh well, sometimes you get a freak of nature.

So what is the bore:stroke ratio? Is it worse than the chevy 305 or what?

Yes, the bore stroke ratio is worse than a 305.

My '83 olds cutlass blew up with only 90,000 miles on it, what a dog. And the tranny only lasted 125,000 miles with a rebuild in the middle. crap crap crap

I did a little research and this is what I found: 305=3.7360:3.4800 and the 307=3.8000:3.3850 (bore:stroke). So the 307 is slightly better than the chevy 305 for power but because there aren't many parts available it's a piece. I wounder if it has any potential and if anybody has ever done anything with it. Does it bolt right up to the 4L60's or is it a different bolt pattern?

Hey I have a 307 in my 89 RS...I'm getting ready to do some mods to it. I'll let you know how it goes..And BTW Advance Auto Parts has a list of parts that will interchange and fit on the Olds 307..
