Surging while crusin' around town... wtf?

Topic says it all. I was driving my girlfriend home tonight and I noticed that while keeping a steady speed, the car tends to 'surge'... pick up and then let off... under acceleration it's ok though (WOT as well)

I know I have a surging idle problem too (though it gets better when I shift the trans into drive), and that 'marbles in the engine' sound is still there (someone said it was timing chain, I don't think I'm argueing that anymore, but I still have to have it looked at.)... I just did cap, rotor, wires and plugs also.

So, with that info, what do you think the surging is, and what can be done to fix it? Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Xeno,

You likely have a fuel delivery problem.

I had major surging at idle and in park. Lights would go up then dim. After new intake swap and brand new INJECTORS the car idles straight at 500. without any hesitation.

Check out my reply to 89RustangRemover's topic concerning his ECM (it's here in this forum). Go to the last couple of paragraphs of the reply where I talk about throttle position sensor and catalytic converters going bad. That could be the problem that you're having. It may not be because you're car still accelerates.

i'd have to go with vader on this one a nd look towards fuel dilervy, mainly filters or bad fuel pump. there are a number of other things too that might be it, mostly tune up related.

Fuel delivery, pickup coil going south or a MAF ready for the dumpster seem to be the three things to cause light throttle surging/bucking.

I had a very similiar problem with my 86 Trans Am when i bought it,but my car usually surged at WOT or close to it,under some load, and it was the MAF sensor, the filament wire inside was broken.I dont really remember if i got a check engine light but i think i did and i got the MAF code.I guess it couldnt hurt to look in the MAF snsor and make sure the filament wire is intact.
