I've heard 10psi for every 1,000rpm's is about the minimum. I don't remember the source of this information. So I can't stand behind it. Anybody, know what is the correct minimun?

A stock M55 oil pump will give about 20-25 idling and 35-40 cruising. If you see values much lower than about 12-15 idling or 30 cruising, it's time to figure out why. If the gauge just reads low but the engine doesn't seem to be in low oil pressure distress, try replacing the sending unit. They go bad alot.

Get a high pressure pump and an Autometer gauge that can read the higher pressures and don't worry about it.

My dad got a high pressure/high volume pump and didn't replace the meter... broke the thing as soon as he turned it on. hehe

Good point RB83L69! I just replaced my oil sending unit a while back because at idle the gauge was reading near zero, and while cruising it wasn't showing too much. Changing the sending unit fixed that problem!

Be careful with those High Volume pumps. I've heard people say that they can pump the oil too fast and leave the pan dry. But, if it's worked for you, then cool!

High volume isn't bad... high pressure is.

My oil psi reads below 25psi at idle when the oil is warm, but goes up in a hurry when I blip the throttle. 10 psi for every 1000 rpms (even less) is fine.

I have a 0-100 psi gauge too, and my psi can read as much as 75psi some times...

i use the melling m55 with a mr. gasket #26 spring. only way i'd use high volumn or preasure is under very narrow applications, mostly racing and with extra capacity oil pan

A HIGH PRESSURE PUMP, IS THE SAME AS A REGULER PUPM, IT ONLY HAS A STIFFER SPRING ON THE BY-PASS, SO IT CAN GO TO HIGHER PRESURES, TO GET HIGHER PRES. YOU USE A HIGHER VOL. PUMP, AS THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES PRES. IS TRYING TO FLOW MORE OIL THROUGH THE SYSTEM THAN IT CAN FLOW, AS CLEARENCES GET LARGER, MORE CAN FLOW, AND THE PRES. DROPS. IF YA DO USE A HIGH PRES. PUMP, AND YOUR ENGINE IS MAKING VERY HIGH PRES. LET IT WARM UP AND COME DOWN A BIT B4 YOU HIT IT, OR WHEN YA BLOW THE OIL FILTER OFF YOU WILL HAVE A BIG MESS TO CLEAN.
