Vortec head owners step inside.

I put the vortec heads on my car and bought some AC plugs that fit the 96 Chevrolet trucks. The problem is that with my heddman headers I can't get a deep well socket or a wrench on some of the plugs because it is 13/16. The wrench won't get a good bite on the plug because the big end of the plug is so close to the head bolts on the bottom.

After I drive around a while I check these plugs and they are loose again.

What plugs are you guys using on these heads with headers? I am wanting some that a 5/8 socket will fit on. I would love part numbers if you know them. Thanks

I'm using Bosch Platinums for the Vortec truck engines. The Bosch part number on the box is 4205. They are 5/8s and are fairly short. The only plug I can't get the 5/8" plug socket on is number 1 (I have TES headers). It is a bitch to get w/ a wrench as well due to positioning, but all the others are just fine and I can eventually get that jerk #1...

I have used MR43LTS (the M is for marine plug) in the AC Delco brand. You can probably get them in R43LTS though. They are just regular plugs, I don't like platinum.

Do you have the L31 vortec heads? If so I got mine through Scoggin Dickey and the plugs that they told me to use are RS12YC Champions. I haven't had much problem with them, you have to use the plug socket with a end wremch on some of them and #5 cylinder I have to get with a short boxed end wrench. As far as clearence from my headers it's fine, I have full length Headmen headers on it.I hope this will help you! NORT Oh yes they are 5/8 plugs

Well, unless things have changed in the last few months, Accel does not make a shorty header plug with the 3/4" reach (threaded part) that the vortecs need. I use the Bosch 4205 platinum plug (same as RayZ). That is the box #. The actual plug # is HR8DPX, which is a stock heat range replacement plug for '96-'98 trucks. This is the only plug that will work with my Thorley headers as they get too close to the boot at a couple of the tubes, due to the vortec's raised exhaust port. The body (tapered seat to boot end of the plug) on these Bosch's are around 1/8" shorter than most plugs, and equivalent to the Accel shorty plug bodies (even though they don't have one with the 3/4" reach). I never used Bosch's before this, but have had very good luck with them and will continue to use them in other vehicles.
