New heads for my 305. Either Aluminum L98 or something else?

I'm looking to get new heads for my 87 IROC LB9 Auto and was thinking about the aluminum corvette heads. Does anyone know if you can still buy these new? If so do you have a p# and price?

OR....what other heads do you reccomend I get? I want a good difference in power but don't want to spend thousands. Again price and p# if possible.

Thanks for the time

Rob

I don't know if L98 Heads will work on a 305 because of the smaller bore (3.74" to 4.00"). I know that the L98 heads will work on the 4.00" bore or the 4.125" bore, but I don't think that the 1.94"/1.50" valves will fit in the 305s super small bore. I think that the S/R Torquers work on the 305.

First, you can run the vette heads on a 305 no problem.

Personally, the best heads my LB9 will ever see are some warmed over stockers. I am not gonna drop $$$ on a set of heads that will be useless on a larger engine. Not that the vette heads are THAT bad, it's just if i was spending the money i'd rather get something better. But you can't get much for a 305 besides those or the SR torquer 305 heads, which again, aren't bad, i just would rather use the money on something better.
305s don't live forever, and thus, my $$$ will wait till something real comes along.

Well the L98s well definetaly fit, they are part# 12556463 and SDPC2000.com is selling them for $399.50 a piece (assembled). They have the 58 cc chambers, so you'll maintain your compression with them.

Ed is right, the L98s do have small intake runners (which is good for a 305), but they will limit your use on high horsepower, big cube engines. However, GMPP does use the same L98 Vette heads on their ZZ4 crate engine (350 cu. in) that pumps out 355 hp and 405 lb. ft. of torque, so they're plenty big to make power on a 350.

As far as them being compared to the S/R Torquer 305s, they have the same size valves and the S/R Torquers do flow a tad better on the intake, but they can't touch the L98s on the exhaust side.

Also remember if you have EGR, the L98s don't have EGR passages so you'll have to route exhaust from your headers like the Corvettes did and new truck do. This can be done, but it'll probably require a little custom work, but the S/R Torquers will be a bolt-in replacement.

Price and part number for the 87+ S/R Torquer 305s is part# 042750A, and they are $729.90 a pair from Summit or Jegs.

I hope this helps you out, if you have any other questions, just ask,

Jason
