Draw backs to a stock distributor?

Should I really be worried about it? It's an HEI (extern. coil) hooked up to a MSD digital 6+. Everything else in the motor and drivetrain have been changed.

I have installed stock distributors (recurved of course) with a good coil onto 450 hp motors and had them pull fine all the way to 7k. Some will say it wont, but if it is in good working order its fine.

Aside from taking a chance the guts are old and worn a stock HEI is plenty of spark for most all motors. The advantage of the MSD type distributors is the ability to easily hook up accesories like 2/3 steps.

As long as the internals are good run it. A new ignition module and cap/rotor would be a basic upgrade and you can have them spun balanced also to ensure proper operation at high rpm. But the last HEI I had set up cost me $250 so by standards of my new stuff I wasted money.

Your current distributor is probably fine. The only reason one might consider replacing one besides the conversion factor would be a lack of weights or broken peices. The last distributor I had to buy was an accel unit, $130. Either accel decided to make higher quality distributors since the last time I got one or they packaged it wrong cause this one isnt like the one I got a couple years back. Either way there was no perfomance gain over the stock peice but it did come with some nice to have components.
