I think my rear main is leaking oil/gas combo

I drove about 60 miles one way and got to my destination and shortly after jumped back in to drive to work. I look in my rearview and see a puddle so I stop and go check it out, it is def. oil and maybe gas (I'm using 20/50 and it was black but smelled just like gas) . I did another test and looked under it after it sat and it seems to be leaking from rear main.....going to take it to mechanic asap tomarrow in case my crank case is filling up.

I am using a 500 horsepower fuel pump and I am thinking that the pressure after I shut it off is causing it to leak or go somewhere where its not supposed to.....any ideas would be helpful.

I'm going to put cardboard under it and anchor it, I have always heard if it is gas it will dry up fast but leave a large expanded dried spot on cardboard that is easy to spot.

last week it was tranny fliud but you couldn't find the dip stick to check it, so i guess there's little chance of you find the dip stick for the oil and checking if there's fuel in the oil is there?

Hey...

Don't be taking your frustrations out on Ede...he has a valid point about your lack of car knowledge. And don't try so hard to make it obvious how young and inexperienced you are...

As for the oil, do as Ede suggested and check the oil. If there is fuel in the oil, you have either a ruptured FP regulator diaphragm or you are simply running too rich and fuel is being washed into the oil.

Also, change your oil...it is truly is black, you are due up. Did you change it when you 1st got the car?

"I am using a 500 horsepower fuel pump and I am thinking that the pressure after I shut it off is causing it to leak or go somewhere where its not supposed to"

Like where? You should be able to find an external fuel leak by looking. If you have a really leaky injector or FP regulator problem, it should be obvious with drivability problems.

c'mon man, that was a little harsh. But, cameron, what is up with this 500hp pump crap? Pumps are rated by what they pump not HP.

Also, the pressure when you shut it off really won't vary from operating pressure. That's not what's happening.

Now you've got me confused. You say you smell a gas leak. Then you say oil is leaking from above the pan. Which is leaking? Unless both are leaking. As for oil, no, it really can't come from anywhere. The rear seal, valve cover gaskets, rear china wall gasket, and distributor seal are the most common places that I've seen, at least, areas above the pan.

i'm sorry i'm such a noob, but I am trying to get my hands dirty and learn and get frustrated like anyone trying something new and other people pointing out to everyone that I am a moron about cars tends to make me a little angry

The gas that is leaking is leaking just as I shut off the car, my pressure is around 45 and it drops down to 20 very quickly and goes down VERY slow from there...I think I might just need a new fuel line...

The tranny fluid that was leaking had some custom black tape that was bad, so I bought a new hose..

The gas and oil are leaking from differnet places but running to the same place if that makes any sense.

The fuel pump was advertised as a 500 hp accel fuel pump so I'm just saying what I was told.

Good day

Knowing that you are in fact a noob now, are you really sure that you are leaking gas? If the oil is black, it probably smells like gas. What else makes you think you are leaking gas? When the pump stops, it should lose fuel pressure.

#1 change the damn oil if its black.
#2 Fix oil leak

Alright I did the cardboard theory I read about in a magazine, I anchored down a thick piece of cardboard and the magazine said the cardboard will be dry but have an siloutte (sp) that liquid was once on it. And sure enough there is gas and 2 and a half inches away there is oil. It is a LIGHT black (I just changed my oil like 4 days ago with 20/50 valv racing) anyway thanks for the helping a noob.

You shouldn't have to start that car to find a fuel leak on a FI engine...Just turn the key to the run position and you should be able to trace the fuel back up the block to the culprit...

It should be centered around the fuel rail, you may have a bad injector, or a leaky o-ring that is allowing fuel to be leaked external to the engine.

Use the same logic to track the oil leak up the block and see where it stops.
