Carb cleaner works pretty well on just about all metal parts.

Brake parts cleaner is a favorite for me, that and oven cleaner. It takes off all the baked on goodies.

I always liked paint thinner and naphtha. Works nice and its cheap, although Im sure its also good for causing cancer.

all good ideas - thanks. probably start working that today, but might wait til i find out if it's gotta be bored or not. i don't think so, but that's what i think, and so far i've ended up a lot deeper in to this than i planned... let's just say i was going to put new exhaust on it and work the heads. pulled the engine for leaks to fix and put a new cam in and the cam bearings are fried, so... it'll be getting new bearings and rings, too, but the block is going in to get tanked, too.

Brake Cleaner all the way. Love that stuff. I probably went though at least 2 dozen cans on my motor pull/swap/install month or two back...
