i just got a rebuilt 350 (carbed) put in swapped from a 305 (carbed) and well when i start it up it smokes quite a bit, i keep on asking the installer and he keeps on coming back its my carb because its running too lean. its a stock qjet from the 305. also during heavy accel it starts to smoke. i also heard something about seals somewhere i can't remember tho if you have the same prob of know what i could do to fix it or what not please help me out.

Ok, stop taking it to this guy. For starters, Black smoke indicates a RICH condition, and the white smoke indicates coolant being burned. I have also seen white smoke on startup from carburated cars running too rich. Get that carburetor rebuilt, and adjusted properly. Until you can do so, check the choke to make sure it's operating correctly. Linkage and all. Good luck!

Are you sure the startup smoke isn't a light bluish color?

yeah, you've either got a bad head gasket or a warped head... I too would suggest against driving it too much... I would suggest changing your oil though and seeing if you made a milkshake though....

if you have another car to drive around, do it until you can take off your heads and determine the real problem. You'll be able to tell if it's the head gasket pretty quickly (and since you're taking the heads offf anyways you'll need to replace the gasket), to check if the heads are warped, just put it on the ground and look for gaps I guess.

If it's smoking white on startup, i'd think it's just condensation burning off in the exhaust. Any water in the oil, or vice-versa?

If it remains white after it's fully warmed up, then there must be a more serious problem. But I think more info is needed...

Blue smoke = oil
White = water
Black = fuel

I know that much at least.
