I suppose it could have been worse. I think my last pass down the track which resulted in my best ET, was on 7 cylinders. At least the damage wasn't as bad as the 383 last fall.
Number 3 intake valve broke off and the head of the valve is sticking straight up out of the piston. This caused a bit of damage to the head. Needs a new valve guide, seats, valves and a lot of cleaning up to remove all the little gouge marks.
The piston will make a good war trophy. The con rod is also bent. I know it can be straightened but it'll probably be cheaper just to use a new rod.
The cylinder wall is cracked. Once a new liner is installed, it will be as good as new.
Because of all the antifreeze that went into the bottom of the engine, I'll be changing all the bearings.
Other than that everything else survived. The crank is good. All the other cylinders look good. Other than #3 all the rest of the valve train looks good.
I'll definatly miss the next race in a week and probably the one 2 weeks after that. The engine should be repaired, rebuilt and installed before June 16 (cross my fingers)

The quickest and final pass before the engine broke is in the above sig. I think it was on 7 cylinders so a 10 second pass may be obtainable this year. I have a 11.0 restriction because I'l still missing some SFI equipment. I think all I need is a tranny shield.
Have you determined teh cause yet? We wouldn't want to have to read another post like this a few weeks from now.
Lash? Float? Lifter pump-up? Lean mix? Defective valve? Any ideas?
I'm assuming you already have a shaft loop and SFCs as part of the equipment repertoir.

Oh hey, Didnt see the updated Times.
Impressive for a 7 cyl run
Lets hope it all goes back together smoothly. Some 10 sec NA Passes would be Good to see.
PLanning on spraying this one ?

All I can determine is a broken Manley valve. I'm not sure what caused it. It's possible there isn't enough clearance between the valve and the piston but all the rest of them are OK.
No pump up with solid lifters. SFC and loop were in before I even took the car to the track for the first time.
Not even considering spraying this engine. As nice as it is, it's too hard to get consistant runs with NOS. When I have to dial in an ET, I can't rely on having the same pressure in the bottle every pass. Even if I had 3 bottles with the other 2 being heated betewwn rounds it's still not worth it. I have NOS on my truck and can empty a 10 pound bottle in 7-10 passes. At close to $60 to fill the bottle, I'd never win enough money to pay for the NOS
The thought will always be there but I really don't expect to put NOS on the car.
I"m still expecting to break more parts this year. I wasn't expecting it to be the engine. I'm pushing to see how much abuse the 10 bolt can handle. Once it goes, a 9" goes in but if it lasts all year then I'll be happy.
The 10 bolt has 4.10 gears, 28 spline axles and 28x9 tires. I'm shifting at 6400 and crossing the finish line just before the shift light comes on so the combination is just about perfect.

It will ruin them. Antifreeze isn't a metal lubricant. Just to be on the safe side I'll change them all. I've see Cummins and Detroit engines that have had antifreeze mixed in with the oil. It's hard to describe what it does to the bearings.
These would probably be good to use since the engine didn't run long once the cylinder wall cracked but I'd rather spend the extra money for new bearings than risk the chance of one failing.

true steve, Plus with High 10's On Motor, Who needs NOS ?
Im suprised to hear that the Ill rumored 10bolt is taking all the abuse, are you transbrake launching ?

No transbrake yet. Currently footbraking from an idle. I doubt the diff could withstand a transbrake launch.
Yeah, I doubt it too, tis why I asked.
Im surpised its withstanding the Torque brakeing tho, Once you come out of the brake and got WOT, that still puts a pretty good shok on the driveline, especially with slicks and the stall youve got Goin.
Chalk one up for the 10 Bolt!
