Starter BS....

Sometimes my car does this thing where it has power but won't crank at all. Its getting ridiculous, the car is hard to start sometimes, cranks alot sometimes, and also makes "different" types of noises when starting sometimes. I say sometimes because it doesn't do it more than not.

I am thinking it has something to do with starter, and just so u know VATS has nothing to do with it. Thanks every1!!

I'd replace the starter just because of the sound, you'll probably need to put the shims in too, or at least I had too. The reason it wouldn't turn over is probably because of a crappy wire somewhere, inspect them when you pull the starter.

i have an 89 RS too with a 305 tbi and i have the same problem. Sometimes it will just click and turn on all the guages but no crank. Other times it will just turn on gauges but no noise or click. I rigged mine. I put a wire from the starter to a hot wire and everytime it acts up i touch them and the car turns on. I need to buy a starter switch. If you think that is a bad idea please tell me cuz i do not want to mess up my car. Oh and my car does this when the temp is hott and here in texas it gets f*&^%$g hott.Later man.

Oh by the way i replaced my starter with remanufactured starters like more than a handful of times and none worked. I think they do this bcuz the exhuast is next to it. I don't know but i hate this problem. I wish someone could tell me what or how to fix it properly.

Do you have a chip in your key? If so the chip could not be making good connection with the switch. "speaking from experince" My car did the same thing I finally got mad at it and replace the lock and key switch and got a new key with a chip made and I haven't had anymore problems with it.

I Hope I helped

rss, what u described is the same exact thing I am having with my car. I just cleaned where the wires connect on the solenoid, so I'll see if that does anything.

everybody should install a remote starter solenoid. its easy and cheap to do, and you will not have this problem again!

Cleaning the wire connections didn't do anything, it just did it again.

From your comments it sounds like your starter motor is beginning to die. Sometimes these puppies can linger on for weeks or months before totally giving up the ghost. The intermittent nature of your problem could be to a boogered up commutator. Sometimes it will work fine, but if you turn the key to start your car and one of the bad commutator bars is directly under a brush, it might just click at you for a while. If you are certain that all of the wire connections are clean and solid (did you check the connections at the battery end of the cable also?) then I would vote for a new starter. The starters for those years have the solenoid integrated onto them, so when you buy a new one you will get a new solenoid also.

but the solenoid being mounted that close to the exhaust sucks. remote solenoids are the best. especially if you have an equal length hedder like mine.

try going under the car and giving the solonoid an easy smack or two with the butt of a screwdriver. that worked for me until i had time to replace the starter. if it happens again, i'm screws since the car's lowered since then...

and if you don't install a remote solonoid, at least do yourself a favor and install a heat shield at the same time. ($7 - $17 at the dealer for the bolt in type for all chevy starters, but listed under RV motors i think) or get one out of summit.

Guys, now the car won't start at all. Its cranking but it won't start. Will a starter that needs to be replaced crank the engine (even though not starting it), or do they not crank at all?? I need to know what this is quick, I also could use a new rotor, wires, and stuff, but could that cause no cranks and all this BS??

If the starter is cranking the car over and it won't catch, you have another problem.
