This sucks... AC doesn't work!!!
This sucks... AC doesn't work!!!
I need some help 'cause I'm clueless.
Last summer was my first with my 92 rs... The AC didn't work for shi** so I took it to a mechanic that my uncle knew who refilled the freon.
The AC worked for a while, like a month or so... Then one day I see this fog coming out of my air vents... WTF?? This happened a few times for a couple minutes each time. Soon my ac was blowing out hot air again....
Well, I made it through the rest of the summer without it and now it's getting hot again.... I need to fix this problem!!
What should I do? What the hell could be causing this leak of freon? How can I get this fixed and recharged when freon is nowhere to be found!?!?!
I just hope that I don't need to convert my system to the new r34 or whatever it is... How much does that conversion cost anyways??
Sorry for all the questions... But this sucks I need some AC! Thanks all replies appreciated

A Freon leak is caused by .... a leak.
Find the leak and fix it. Most commonly the leaks are at the fittings, or where the rubber hoses meet the metal lines with those crappy crimped sleeves the factory uses. Sometimes there's a hole in the condenser or evaporator, or the compressor seal leaks, but usually it's a hose. You can probably rent a leak detector and pinpoint it.
Freon can be bought at auto paorts places. It's only like $20 a can or so, you'll need between 4 and 5 cans.
It's just as pointless to put R-134A in it if it leaks. You gotta find and fix the leak(s).

Brian, I too had the leaking system at compressor. The switch to R-134 is not that hard or expensive. I think GM views the change can happen with no modifications with the exception of changing the charging valve. Find the leak first. If memory serves a black light is used to locate the leaking area.
When I switched over to R-134 I changed the dryer, and oriface to insure no problems.

Good luck.

I'd suggest you just go ahead and convert to the new system... I think it's only 150 if you take it to a shop, so it'll be a lot cheaper if you do it yourself. In any case, while it doesn't cool as well as the older system, it is a hell of a lot cheaper to recharge it. And it's better for the environment. If you're concerned about that. hehe

Black light only works if you put in the leak detector stuff. I haven't seen R12 for sale for years in an autoparts store around here. The conversion kit you can get at wal-mart works well and has all the stuff you need to convert and recharge and cost 35 bucks. But, you still need to find the leak. I'll convert mine eventually, but I still have 3/4 of a 30 pound bottle of R12(bought it before the price went up)
