just bought a new starter and had an engine rebuilt and dropped it in the car. starter worked about the first 10-15 times and then it started like...locking up when trying to crank the engine. zings and basically sucks.

would this mean that i need to install shims for the starter or is it possible the starter just needs replaced? it has lifetime warranty so no big deal if i have to take it back

The only thing I would think would make a starter come out and not engage is either A. a chipped flywheel ring gear or B. a chipper starter gear. The shims ussually pull the starter out and away from the flywheel if it binds a bit. I would pull the starter and check both gears if they are okay then try shimming if it still won't work, take the POS starter back.
