Timing woes...
From the beginning.....
It started at the south west mini gathering. I pulled my car around to cody's driveway and he and Phantom noticed that it did have a really rough idle. Turns out it also had a nice rather large vacume leak! I really didn't/don't know what has been donw to this engine, se we went digging. Still the car "sounded" wrong, and I told them my scan tool read 36* BTDC timing. Which everyone thought sounded a little weird, but I didn't trust my scanner. We were going to check it there, but a timing light wasn't anywhere to be found. Well, I just got my 1st paycheck from my new job so I went out and bought a timing light. (nothing fancy)
Well, I just tested it tonight. Here's what I saw....tell me what you guys think.

Sorry for the bad ASCII
Anyways it should get the point across. The ^ in the upper right of the screen is approx where the center of the timing indicator is. the
--> approx where I saw the timing mark. This was at idle in park idling around 900 RPM. I think that this is way off since the Helm manual says at idle in part it should at least be on the indicator! Could this be why I dynoed at 158 HP??!?!?!?!? I could look it up, but which side of the ^ is BTDC and which is ATDC?
Thanks
Corry

well if i understand you bad ascii correctly your timing is good, not knowing what car/engine you have. if you have an est you need to check and set base timing with it disabled.

I'm guessing, but 158hp on a dyno sounds like a non-TPI V-8...let us know what type of engine you have and you could probably get more help.
You have to turn off the car and unplug the tan wire near the blower motor first. When you start the car, the SES light should come on....then check the timing.
On V-8's there are are from left to right...three evenly spaced notches, then one notch spaced out a bit further. The valley between the further notch represents 0 degrees, the notch to the right of the bigger valley is -4, the first notch to the left is +4, then each notch after that is another +4........also its a good idea to get some paint and mark the notch on the harmonic balancer, it makes it really easy to see even without a timing light. Hope this helps

Alright, that ascii didn't work well at all! Let me instead draw a picture and have it hosted....it is a TPI V-8 I know it is running like sh*t!
http://www.geocities.com/clazarowitz/timing.html
I hope this clears things up a bit! I honestly think this is way off. The yellow/red mark (depending on the pic) is the timing mark on the wheel. on the second pic since it is 2-D top view (well sorta) the white line is the very top of the wheel.
The timing indicator may not be exactly how it looks on the car, but you get the idea right?
Thanks
Sorry about the edits, trying to make it easier to get to the info!.
Anyways, here is what I know about the engine. It was sold to me as a 350 LT-1. Obviously I knew it wasn't an LT-1 I just figured someone got their l codes mixed up and meant l98. Only real performance mods are SLP 1 3/4 headers jet hot coated, SLP 3" catback, gutted cat (It did it to itself honest!) MSD 6A ignition, MSD Blaster SS coil, accell 8.8 mm wires, Bosh +4 plugs (doubt they help but what the hell!) and thats about it for the motor! I realize the 305 should have had the smaller headers, but I thought it was a 350! (Anyways, I will buy a 350 once I hve the $$$) 158 HP is way too low, either the Dyno F'd up (which it only did 1x there rating an lt1 bird at I think 600 hp one run but properly on all others, or my engine is seriously F'd!
Thanks

The pics are from the front so behind what you see is the engine, behind it is the radiator. Is it that bad? I may have to re-time it tomorrow! I am not going anywhere today...friends b-day party
Thanks for the info...I suppose I should break out the manual....but I am just too damned lazy on a party day :P

Alright, I assume so, I figured if it was that far BTDC it should have been detonating like crazy! So I will have to pull it back tommorow!
Thanks for the input guys!
