Oil Pump ? For L98

(1) where can i get the Mr. G spring (any p/n?) to up the pressure on my new oil pump before installing (melling M55), and (2) how do you guys attach the screen to the pump for security? (3) might as well say i'm not even sure how the drive shaft attaches, either... getting my engine back monday, so i'll have to put the pump in and put the heads on. can't wait...

the drive shaft pretty much just falls into place, it goes into the #5 main cap then bolt the oil pump to the cap. i buy the springs from jegs. i get 5 or so at a time. i weld a brace on the pick up and bolt it to the pump body. i don't like the idea of welding on the pump, but most people do it with no problems.

thanks for the reply... yea, i'm the one who took everything all apart and just wanted to be sure i do it all right when i put it back together. i can probably get my machine shop to secure the pick-up screen for me real quick when i go pick up my engine monday.

When it came time for me to get my oil pump ready I just went to Auto Zone and had them order the Mr. Gasket #26 Pressure spring for me, it was like 4 dollars or something.

Ede, I went to a ton of different places asking for a brace to hold my oil pump pickup to my oil pump and they all looked at me like I was stupid.... where do you find these braces?

Anyways I had an exhaust shop put one tac weld on my pickup to weld it to the pump... they did it for free, gotta love 'em

i take a piece of 1/4 round steel hammer one end flat and drill a hole in it for the pump body bolt and leave the other end alone and weld it to the pick up.

and i guess it takes a "special" tool to smack the screen in to the pump, so that'll be done at the shop, as i said earlier... then set the depth on it... then get it spot welded... wish i'd done this earlier... oh well, a learning experience for me...

I welded mine on. for the quick spot weld the pump never gets hot.

takes no "special" tool. There IS a special tool for putting the pick-up into the pump that makes it a lot easier, but you have a few routes.

A) (the route i took) take a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer and pound the pick-up into the pump by smacking the screwdriver around the collar of the pick-up in a circular motion until it got in

B) Doing the same thing only with a line wrench that goes around the collar so you dont beat the crap out of it

C) Buy the specialty tool, I think it costs 10-15 dollars. Not bad, and can be used again and pay itself off easily.

D) Pay alot more to take it to a shop and not know how nice they were to your oil pump or pick-up

Personally if I had to do it all again, I'd still use the screwdriver method, but I'm just cheap like that

If you order the Mr gasket spring from jegs you could also get their pick up retainer http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...38&prmenbr=361

i don't know what that spring does in a M55 pump, but I used a high volume pump on a 93 Z28 I just built and it sucked the pan dry, at 4000 rpms it would lose oil pressure. I put a stock pump in it and took care of the problem. I never believed a HV pump could suck a stock pan dry but it did, and it could have cost me an engine.

the pressure spring effects just that.... pressure, not volume. in a regular M-55 oil pump the pressure spring is nice reassurance that everything is getting lubed well.
