I had this problem on my Monte Carlo SS a while back. The only time that I really noticed was in the snow - I could put my foot on the brake, put the car in drive, and have the rears tires turn with the fronts locked down. It turned out to be the proportioning valve - this valve regulates the proportion of hydraulic pressure going to the front and rear brakes when you push the pedal. When my valve malfunctioned, it only allowed pressure to go to the front brakes.

Hope this helps.

My car does the same thing (84 firebird S/E, rear discs). I was told by a local shop that I need new calipers so I have new ones coming and new rotors too. But you're saying it could be my proportioning valve? Where is this located?

Chris, the prop valve's under the master cylinder. 82-88 rear discs had a design problem- and a GM recall! The recall was only valid for rear disc cars with a manual transmission. If you have an automatic, you can't get them fixed for free- but you can buy the "updated" caliper rebuild kits from GM.

Check out Dan's page (ws6transam) for info on the recall. The info's at the bottom of the page, below the 1LE stuff. The link is: http://www.isthq.com/~dan/1LEbrake.html I've gotta rebuild my rear discs, too.

I have an '84 5 speed and have this same problem...
Am I out of luck for a free fix?
Either way its no big deal.

My problem too, how hard is it to change the valve, thats probably why my rear disk make a rattling noise or maybe just bad calipers

Camaroman, no, you can get the free fix- unless of course it was done already to your car. Visit http://www.alldata.com to look up the recall info, and then just call your GM dealer. He'll put in the VIN code, see if it's been done yet (and it probably hasn't), then schedule you for the work. If he acts like a pain in the butt, call another dealership.

The service bulletin info means that I will still have to pay for it. I called the guy at the dealership and he said that there is no open campaign on them. I guess I'll have to pay for it then
