dont expect much from removing the cooler (as far as better cooling....it just gives better access for leaves and bags to block off your radiator instead of the cooler....whats it called again (evaporator?)
did u remove the silver canister thingie?
you can remove the big black thing that the silver canister connects to....not sure how...but ive seen pics with out it...i think you need some special heater core then though....so dont quote me...and mess up your car
mine is still on there

well heres what I did when I removed all that... however I think I went further then what you plan on doing.
I removed the compressor, lines, ac cooler, the blower motor and cond., that whole plastic mounting piece on the fire wall and the dash climate control. I put switches for my fans and switches for other things heh in the dash spot. It also free'd up a lot of space in the engine bay and I'm putting a trans and oil cooler it its place. On the fire wall I cut a piece of aluminum to cover up the hole and just bolted it up using the factory bolt holes for the plastic blower/cond mount. I have an 85 Camaro however I also have a 91Z28 serpitine belt setup, same one as you no doubt. When I removed the AC I put the 1LE AC bypass pulley in. You absolutely have to do this since the water pump runs off the back of the belt. Hope that helps.

first of all...you dont absolutely HAVE to have that pulley...i dont...u just have to reroute the belt so that the water pump runs in the same direction as before.
id take out that black plastic thing on the firewall...it looks MUCH cleaner.

You could go to a junkyard and find an older cam/fb without a/c and steal the blower motor housing. Make sure to take the 'squirrel cage' off the blower motor as the non a/c one is not as wide.
Also the resistor pack in the non a/c cars is square and the one on the a/c cars are triangular. A minute with a die grinder and it fits right in and looks 100% stock.

What is involved in removing the black piece from the firewall? I am going to be doing an engine swap and I figure that will be the easiest time to get rid of it.(A/C has been out for a while)

Some of the screws holding the heater/evaporator box to the firewall are easy to get at; they're on the firewall. For others (two or three? They hold the lower part of the heat/evap box to the firewall), you'll have to go underneath the dash, from the inside of the car. Just look for the silver screws (10mm)- they're easy to spot underneath the dash.
I noticed a slight improvement in cooling with my condensor gone from in front of the radiator... maybe 10 degrees or so...
