detent cable ? vacuum modulator
detent cable ? vacuum modulator
i bought the turbo 350 conversion kit from b &m and im kinda stumped on how to put it in. when i was looking at the directions it says i need to buy a detent cable and a vacuum modulator. what are they? why do i need them? How much do they cost? thanx
Vacuum modulator is nothing. $15 bucks for an adjustable one from the same company you bought the tranny. Or you can probably pick one up from the local speed shop. It determines your PART THROTTLE shift points. It is located near the tailshaft of the tranny on the passenger side and is held in place with a single bolt and hold down clamp. Simple drop in. You have to run a vacuum line up from the modulator to the engine and hook it up to a full manifold vacuum source (again, simple simple stuff).
The detent cable is also called a kick-down cable and runs from the trans (pass. side) up to the thrttle arm on the carb. It's also cheap and avable from any local tranny shop or a good auto parts store. When you go to WOT the kick down cable opens a valve in the trans and allows the trans to downshift. Otherwise, you won't downshift into a lower gear when you "nail it."
The only other part you may ultimately end up needing is the correct throttle cable bracket to HOLD the kick-down cable at the right distance from the carb's throttle arm. If not supplied as part of the kit you can buy a "universal adjustable" one from many of the aftermarket tranny vendors. They allow you to adjust the cables relative to the carb's throttle arm and make sure the geometry of all the linkages is correct.
