Which block and heads?

Something is wrong with my car...I was told that its a busted lifter or push rod....I havent really had it checked out but it ticks really loud under load on the passenger side far back rockers.....and its not the rockers out of adjustment,,,I already checked that...I still drive it and it ticks while I drive it and has lost power.

anyways..if Im going to have to go back into the motor to fix it, I just assume buy a 350 block and heads and transfer all my stuff over to it. Do I need to look for any certain block year and heads? I kinda want to keep my center bolt covers but dont really need to. I just want to be able to move what I have right over to the block and be done with it. SOmething that will go with my tranny too. Im dumb in this area...

help me out here?

thanks!

Look for a 87 or older L98. You want a block with 1pc RMS, and roller cam.

But really any sbc will work, you will just have to change the flywheel/flexplate. Heads are swappable between any sbc so thats not a issue really.

Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak?

exactly what i was thinking. take it to a exhaust shop, they should be able to tell you right away. and would be happy to fix it :-P it'll be there if you get a new block and heads too if it is an exhaust leak btw.

Short block is a block with crank, pistons and rods installed. A Long block is a short block with heads and sometimes an intake.

Its not a header tick its a loud. Its kinda sounds like a knock and a belt squealing at the same time. hard to explain.
I can hear it coming from under the valve cover. It sounds like its hitting the cover but its not. Someone told me to pull the plug wire from the cylinder that I might thinks its on and if I still hear the sound then thats a fairly good thing saying thats the problem is on the top of the motor meaning push rod or lifter...but if the sound goes away then thats a bad thing.

could be a broken valve spring or a loosened rocker adjusting nut,a bent pushrod or a collapsed lifter.any of these are fairly easy to repair with the heads still on.or you could have wiped a cam, also doable with the heads on.
either way i'd get under the offending valve cover and check it out without driving the car anymore!drop a valve = buy a new engine!once you get it fixed you can worry about building a new 350 or buying a crate.
if it does turn out to be a bearing or a broken ring you can still use everything off the top of the motor, and possibly the balancer and flexplate or clutch depending on whether the block you end up with is an 86 or newer(1 piece rear main seal)or an older one(2 piece)
.i personally reccomend having one built by a local machinist with an excellent reputation, but if you get a crate motor,do yourself and get a chevy, jasper is also very good but you'll end up paying as much for one as a new chevy motor.
just my .02
Eric
