crankshaft seal on timing cover...
does the "flat" part of it go in to the cover, or should it face out? i can't remember, someone help me out... thanks. (just looks like it would work better going in to the cover)

Flat part faces out.
Put a very small bead of silicone or gorilla snot in the very bottom of the seal bore, such that the very edge of the metal cladding of the seal, will insert itself into the sealer; support the inner part of the seal bore itself, on a FLAT block of wood, such as the end of a 4x4; lay another block of wood FLAT across the top of the seal, with the seal laying FLAT on top of the seal bore; and give it one enormous whap with your BFH to drive it in.
DO NOT try to tap it in around the edges: it WILL leak if you try to do that. Also, make sure that the timing cover is flat, or again it WILL leak.
Oh, did I mention, that you want everything FLAT and STRAIGHT when you do this.
