Supporting Engine while tranny is out.

im going to pull the T5 in my 84 camaro for a rebuild. The problem is, i will be moving soon and need to move the car also. i wanted to know a way i can support the engine while it will be on a car dolly. for now ill just leave a jack and block of wood under the oil pan, but when i comes time to move i will need a way to support the engine without the use of a jack underneath. does anyone know of a way i could do this so i wont bust up my dizzy when i let the jack down? thanks alot

I don't know of a way to do that, but I wouldn't try move it at all without a tranny installed.

Find a bolt hole on the back of the engine you can run thick coat hanger or welding wire through. Use that to strap it up against something strong on the firewall or cowl area. There's still a bit of weight to it, but the engine mounts are doing most of the work.

Strapped up plenty of trannys this way (which are, admittedly, lighter) but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do the engine in a similar way.

If you have an engine lift loop on one of the front intake bolts (mine did, drivers side) then put a chain on that and put that chain up to the rad support or a part of the frame.

Actually, if you still have the exhaust system on it, that might be good enough.

Why?!?!

----

Anyway, I usually use one or two bolts in the rear of the block and then tie them off somewhere. Then I move the car without a tranny.

In 15 years, i've never seen a motor fall out of a car, or break anythign when the tranny was missing..

i couldnt agree more we move them around everywhere without a tranny in the vehicle but as for towing one long distance i still dont think it would be a problem at all but if you fee the need put a 2x4 behind the engine between it and the firewall and let the engine rest on it that way you dont have to worry about it "falling out"..LOL...

i dont think it would anyway

Remove the distributor and the motor will tilt back all it wants without breaking anything... Last time I installed my transmission I used a tow strap to keep the motor forward. Roped it around the accessory brackets and then around the rad support. click-click-click, its sitting forward.
