Need info about possible new setup
I currently own a 1989 L98 IROC-Z with the mods listed below. The car has close to 110,000 miles on it and I am thinking about switching to an entirely new setup.
I am toying with the idea of dropping in a ZZ4 crate motor backed by a T56/3.73's.
First off, I live in NJ, and I will need to get through emissions. Does anyone here think that is possible?
Secondly, I will be keeping the TPI with the ZZ4. What will I need to do to make sure that it is tip-top running condition? What other mods will the car need so that it can handle that kind of power and be able to put it to the ground as well.
Thanks.

89,
The crate engien with a TPI system should act just like any other 350 with the TPI and the ZZ4 cam. You would probably want to oust the Hypertech PROM and get a custom designed more for use with your new cam profile. You'll need to keep the EGR and EVAP, cat converters and A.I.R. system to pass inspection, but none of those have to cost you any power (only space).
A ZZ4 cam will want to breathe more than the TPI was originally designed and at a higher RPM, so you might need to alter the plenum and base (porting). Your AFPR might be very helpful in getting the most of the setup once the PROM is burned.
As for getting the best use of more power, you'll need to get good drag tires on the rear and make sure the rear suspension and torque arm are in good condition and correctly adjusted for angle. You might want to get a pair of front drag tires to lighten the load and roll more easily.
