VATS problem
'89 RS 5.0 TBI/700R4....
Intermittently, the car wont turn over (wont crank)... security light does NOT cycle off as it should... I am assuming it is the VATS acting up... is there a way to delete this feature without burning/buying a new chip?
EDIT... after some searching... it looks relatively easy...
If I determine the resistance value of the key (assuming I can measure across both sides of the key) , then I should be able to duplicate the resistance with common resistors available from radio shack... correct? The only thing is where would I splice these resistors in-line? The connector below the steering column?
a previous owner had the same problem.. which is how the car came to be in my hands....
any help would be greatly appreciated...

You're on the right track. Just find a wiring diagram and cut the wires and put the resistor across them. Might go to the dealer and have a new key made, might help the problem but those keys are about $25.

thanks for the reply... I think it's simple enough to splice the resistors into the plug under the dash... but I've been lucky thusfar... the car hasn't let me down lately...
I guess I will stop by radio shack tonight...

I did exactly that after one of the wires to the key cyllinder broke on me... and it works...
I don't use it, but it's always an option if I have the same problem again... I'm implementing other security measures as well so I won't have to depend on my key beig measured...
