305 head gasket recommendations

I'm looking for a good 305 head gasket. I want the smallest volume so i can get alittle compression boost. I've searched on here and didn't find what i wanted. I know GM has some pretty good head gaskets but i don't know if there is something that will work good on a 305. What is the shim head gasket used on the L69? I like the GMPP 10105117 Compositin w/ Stainless faces but its a 4.100" and .028" thick. or 3830711 steel shim .026" thick 4.100" bore. But these have huge bores. Anything closer to the 305 bore?

Thanks

I know 305's suck and have limited potential, but i want to port my 416 heads until i get an LS1.

You might wanna try the shim type gasket the HO motors came with. I don't know what the compressed thickness is, but it seems much thinner than Fel-pros...

Alright i found a Felpro: fel 8510PT
Application: GM PROD. V8, 262, 305(5.0l)-VIN M Eng., 1975-01

Now does anybody know any specs or used this gasket before. I can't find the specs anywhere, summit, jegs, fel-pro.

I also found a GM pn# used by Hotrod in a 305 buildup they did in 83, but i can't find that either. Head Gaskets.........Chevrolet..............................462690

Hmmmm.....that's odd.

Here's what I'd do. Tell the dealer you want a stock head gasket for a 83 305 High Output motor, vin code "7". See if he gives you the same part number you have.

That's what mine used, might work!

Oh, and I disagree...305's don't suck. I loved mine! But I had the L69 version...... Just waitin for another car to drop it in!

Re: 305 head gasket recommendations

The Gm head gasket #462690 is a steel shim embossed style peice.

This gasket is made to work with the GM lite-weight head casting, it will seal the lower part of the head in the water jacket area.

It has the 305 bore size and i've measured the compressed thickness at 0.016"

If you call GM parts counter they will cross #462690 over to 10105115 which is a composition gasket that compresses to 0.026"

tough peice to get your hands on

Well, that search function seems to be doing its job.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org. Looks like you have access to GM information. Although it's about 3 years late in this case.
