starter woes

i finally got my damn starter off and out, but now i have the next problem..
getting it back in there and aligning the bolts, there is only one way i can get the starter up in there and then i have to turn it, but the solenoid hits the oil pan and i cant turn it any furter, ive tried at it for a good 2 hours and havent had any success, any ideas?
oh yeah, the starter came with some shims, 3 to be exact, should i use them? or should i just not worry about them

If the starter came out with the right combo of twisting and maneuvering, it will go back in........however, short of that, 2 hours can be a killer on the arms!

Another option is to take the selenoid off, put the starter up into approximate position, after getting everything past the pipe, and re-attach selenoid just before you push it all the way up into position.

No need to get drastic and start cutting things. Good Luck!

if i take the solenoid off, what is involved?
i know there are 2 bolts, and there is a metal stopper thing that i have to take off, is that it?

im at my girlfriends house right now and we are about to go and cut the exhaust around the area of the starter, im not really worried about the loudness, but if i do cut it off, would a muffler shop be able to weld it back on? i dont want to cut it if that means i have to buy a new y-pipe. please help, thanks.

Yes, that is all that is involved with the selenoid. Not the preferred or recommended method, but if you feel the need to cut your exhaust pipe, go right ahead, a muffler shop can reweld it.
