What is valve lash?

I'm sure someone can explain it better than me, but I get it started.
It refers to how tight you make the rocker arm to the pushrods. You have to tighten them to the correct valve lash or you could bend or break your rods.

valve lash is the clearance between the rocker and the valve. on mechanical lifters you have clearance you set with a feeler gage on hydrolics you tighten the rocker until you have contect between the rocker and valce and then tighten another 1/2 to 3/4 turn (on SBC). some engines don't have an adjustment and others use a differant method to set clearance.
