metal spike stick to drain plug of engine...possibility??
it happen to my friend after he change from castrol 10w30 to motul 10w30full syntetic any links?car is a 4gen camaro
Are you saying that there was a piece of metal stuck to the oil drain plug? Chances are that it was lodged in the engine with all the sludge, and the synthetic is just cleaning it out, like it does with everything else.

thanx but...
there is not only one metal piece, there is a lot of metal flake stick to the plug maybe its like you said the oil is cleening up the interal engine part, me i was thinking about bearing on cam or some thing else falling appart. im glad to ear that mabe its normal.
and the last reply you gave me about my pick up coil my car is running fine because of you thanx alot again... just some fine tuning tips still needed.

maybe i'm not "well learned" but I dont think that the block "sheds" metal as a natural process. The metal flakes probably look like little pieces of sand, no?

Yea... um... I think you may need to clarify your question a bit. Typically, finding a bunch of metal in your oil pan is not a good thing.

when he changed his oil, there was some grey sludge (metalic particles because it sticks to the magnet). This is the first oil change since he switched to syntetic oil.
my question is, what could it be? is it just some sludge that got "cleaned out" because of the detergents in syntetic or did he spin a bearing?? the oil pressure is good, engines runs and sounds good.
anyone had a something similar happen to them??
TIA

Bearing material is not magnetic. Keep an eye on it. How much metal is on drain plug? What is history of motor? Is this a new engine or well used?
How much metal is critical. I'd keep an eye on it. Get a spare drain plug. In 500 miles, pull the plug ( DO NOT CLEAN IT ), collect a small amount in a glass container that can be sealed. Send the collected oil and the old drain plug ( with any material on it ) to a Company that does oil analysis. Check with trucking companies.
If new engine it could just be rings bedding in. However, if a flat tappet cam, it could be lifters and cam lobes starting to go bye bye. Is it a flat tappet cam?
Again..what is history on motor?

Hi everybody, I'm the guy Mathieu is talking about.
I have a LT1 camaro Z28 and this past summer at about 56,000 miles I installed a cam kit on it (comp xe230/236 cam with new valvetrain) and ported the heads a little bit. Threw on some LT's and mufflex exhaust with spintech. As well I put in some LT4 injectors with a PCMforless tune. The car only saw standard non synthetic 10w30 oil it's whole life.
For the "break in" of the new valvetrain parts I used regular non synthetic 10w40 oil that the mechanic recommended. Took it easy for the first few hundred miles, never ran it past 3000 RPM. Oil pressure was always great at 55 psi cold and never below 30 psi warm idle. At about 300 miles I changed the oil and it was very clean. A few little metallic specs I picked up with a magnet here and there but nothing major (It did smell a little bit like gas, and my car has been running pretty rich, but I am going to check fuel pressure next season and log a few runs with LT1 edit to deal with this issue) For this first oil change, I made the switch to synthetic oil and put in some mobil 1 10w30 with the high capacity K&N HP3002 oil filter. One stupid thing I did do was put in a bit too much oil. With the K&N filter, I put in about 5.5L and on the dipstick it showed about 1/2 inch past the last hole
At the time I didn't think anything of it.
So fast forward to last week, it's been about 1200 miles since the cam swap, the car has seen dyno and track time since the first oil change, and now I'm prepping the car for storage and when I drain the oil, there is this greyish-black sludge coating my magnetic drain plug
And when I examined it closer, there were 3-4 metal shavings (not small sand like particles like the first time) about 3-4 mm in length stuck on it as well
Needless to say with all these stories of spun bearings after cam swaps I'm a bit worried for my bottom end. Although when I took it out for a spin the other day, the oil pressure was great as usual and the engine runs smooth as the day I bought it or maybe even smoother.
Thanks for all the help so far I apreciate it.
