a buddy gave me a chrome water pump for this 350 tpi that i'm puttting together.it's your standard long style small block chevy water pump.the motor i'm putting together is a 1989 5.7 TPI.as long as it's the right style(long or short)it'll work right?GM didn't have reverse cooling untill 93 right?

I think they had reverse cooling as early as 86? I beleive it was when the cars went to the serpentine setup. This pump will not work on your car.

If he was using a serpintine system and that's what you plan on using it should be ok I think. Do you know if it's reverse flow or not?

You have to find out if it is a reverse rotation pump or not. The WP spins counter clockwise on serpentine belt cars, clockwise on regular V belt cars.
The only reverse flow cooled chevy engines are the LT1/LT4/L99 engines. Reverse flow has NOTHING to do with the rotation of the WP.
