Rebuild 2

Hey fellas,

Made some progress on the car.
got everything cleared out for the block to be lifted

However, i had couple more questions that deserve a new topic.

Where the best place to place the hoist chains on the
L98? Is there stud holes somewhere around there?
on the block or the heads?

and whats the easiest method of dismounting the tranny from the block?? lift it alil bit first or??

seems to be a pretty tight spot.

other than that, its ready to come out;
having trouble gettin a engine stand, but ill figure it out.

got the oil filter off and the oil drained,
I didnt feel or see any metal in the oil or the filter .. perhaps I got lucky??

anyway, ill post progress as I go, its looken good so far,

need to pop that pan tho.

To be safe, I'd remove the runners and such, so as not to damage them...then attach to intake bolts that go into the head. Either make or buy the little angled iron pieces with a hole in them to hook your chains too, or bolt to.

If you're leaving the tranny in, then just unbolt the three tq converter bolts from the flexplate...assume it's a auto since you have the L98.

i like the lift from the ends of each head or the emds of the intake. use flat piece of steel and angle steel, whatever works. i'd unbolt the trans and TC and leave it in the car.

Axle/Gears: stock??
yeah well i didn't eve use angle iron on my car. and it still worked but it's probally a good idea to do.. and if you have an equalizer for the setup that really helps to get the motor out nice and level.

another vote for attaching to the front of the heads and other end at the reat of the heads. there are good bolt holes there for the chain to angle acros the engine.

I usually take some semi-long bolts, stick em through the links of the chain, and put them in the front of one head, and the back of the other. Works like a charm every time.

I see now, after i got that water pump off and the AC compressor rack ..I can see 2 studs with a torx head on it that held the AC and power steering rack in place... looks grade 8 bolt to me .. but, my buddy suggestted taken off the runners just
in case, hes a big block guy, he was impressed with the cleaniness of the motor. and most of all the ease of taken the motor apart ..

I have the 2 angle irons and enuff chain and a
decent engine hoist.

I wont have any problems with the back of the motor hittin
the firewall on the way out??

3 bolts on the tranny ??
I thought there was like 4-6 all around the tranny bell housing .. somene said from the torque converter acouple post back .. plz elaborate???

thats not the easiest way to slide the trany off??

Lemme know ..thanks fellas

BTW, since i think its a chewed up rod bearing, I drained
the oil and cut the filter in 1/2.

I didnt see a trace of metal shards in the filter or in the bottom of the draining pan ..

This a good thing??

1. you shouldnt have any problems with it hitting the fire wall because you will be lifting up and then pulling the engine forward to clear the mounts and to pull the engine away from the transmission guid pins..

2. the transmission bellhousing has 6 bolts in it and then you have 3 bolts holding the torque converter to the
flywheel that have to be removed

3. jack the transmission up from underneath with a jack and a board on the transmission pan so you dont damage the pan ....then unbolt the bellhousing bolts and torque converter bolts, engine mounts and all wireing then when your lifting the engine you will have to raise the transmission up to ....as you get the engine clamshell mounts past the frame mounts start to pull forward on the engine and have someone use a prybar and seperate the engine and transmission ...when they come completely apart you can then lift the engine the rest of the way out of the car and just make sure you clear everything around it like the windshield wiper motor .....and such

Hey thanks General,

I got the 3 torque converter bolts off ..came off
easy

the block has notthing attached to it anymore ..
got all the harness' out of the way and labled.

I was wondering if anybody had a great way to get to those tranny housing bolts.

is the best way to go from the top with and extension ??

or go from on the bottom on your back with an extension?

this is prolly the hardest step for me, gettin to those back bolts.

other than that, if I get them the blocks a commen out.

Thanks again guys ..

Im gunna try to get a digi and take pictures of the torn up bearing (if it is) and the crank.

should be interesting.

im waiting right now for another set of hands.
I learned my lesson

I just went through this tonight. Don't forget about your tranny cooler lines that run along the oil pan on the passanger side. Almost ripped mine out.

Yea, they are tucked up there quite well I might add.

need to figure what I can squeeze on up in there.

I did rip out what appears to be the knock sensor,
its on the passenger side in the middle of the block right ?

i always remove all the transmission bellhousing bolts from underneath....

i use about 2 feet of extension and a 9/16 swivel socket ...you can get to all 6 of them with this set up and have them out in about 5 minutes....
