Help, Lineup Top Dead center and this is what happens

OK in an earlier post I said tha whn the rotor lined up to the #1 cylinder location the harmonic balancer was about 20-30* past straight up. So my brother and I bolted everything back up an tried to start the engine up. It fied an rav very rough, but it began to run properly as we turned the disributor Counter Clock Wise to about 90* and ran fine, but the SES light was on, Probably because of the EGR missing, and when we reved it up it would backfire at about 2500-3000RPMs.
So where have we went Wrong? SOmethings Not Right, please give us any Ideas on what may be wrong.

Does it lug when you first tried to start it?
May be your distributor is off by a gear. Take it out and move it a tooth and see what happens.

Also possible your damper's outer ring is starting to spin. how old is it? What does the rubber ring look like on the damper?

Is it possible you have a 350 balancer on there? Most 305 balancers are hollowed out on the back side and are timed at about 12 o'clock. Most later model 350 balancers are solid and have the timing stripe at about the 2 o'clock position. The 350 balancer fits but the timing mark is usually in the different location.

what have you done to of "bolted everything up", just intake swap? if you've not changed the cam or gears set the dampner mark on 6* with #1 on compression stroke and the rotor pointing to #1. use a light to set the timing with est unplugged.
