Need your opinions on 305 guys!!!!
My buddy was cleaning ot his storage unit and he had a couple of blocks in there with some other misc. parts and told me if I took all the stuff I could have it....
He gave me an almost complete chevy 350 2 bolt block all refreshed and ready to roll...
He also gave me a 305 block that I would like you guys to help me identify, since it will be going into an old pontiac ventura that I have.
It's a 305, casting #'s on the block are, GM 5.0L G
then E 167 and then it looks like the casting # is 14093267?
Last 3 of the casting # on the heads are 081?
Is this a good basis for a mild street project, it's basically just going to be driven to work and to local cruise nights and what not, or when I take my son out to dinner on mondays.
He also gave me another set of heads
Casting # on those look like h23-77?
last 3 of the casting # are 458?
He told me the 305 was out of an 87 z28 and it only had about 50k on it when removed.
If any of you guys can help me identify this block, I would appreciate it.
HAppy Turkey day!!!!!

The 081 heads are TPI heads, they are good if ported. A block is a block, makes no difference.

thanks man. I wasn't sure if it was a tpi or a carbed motor because it has the mounting hole for a mechanical fuel pump.
Is this a roller block?
I'd like to slide a mild cam in there while it's all apart.
Heads don't appear to bein bad shape at all. I'm going to put new valve guides and seals in them and see what my guy at the machine shop can do as far as porting them and what not.
So am I to assume as to what he told me was true that it was out of an 87 Z28?

So I assum that when I take the lifters out I'll see if it's a roller block or not?

deff. a roller block.
I'm assuming it's an lb9?
What's the biggest cam I can use in it and not have to do any valvetrain mods or a stall converter?
Soemthing like a .510?

In '87, the LB9 and LG4 used the same block and heads. The LB9 cam and exhaust was better than the LG4. The S/N stamped on the front passenger side of the block may give more clues to which it was.
To use a stock stall converter, you're going to have to keep the cam pretty mild. It isn't the lift, but the duration and lobe centers that determine that.
