Wow, could be anything, my first thought is possibly torque converter bolts are a little loose, I'm assuming its an automatic.

Check out the heat shields on the manifolds and the cat, probably rattling from the engine viberation at idle.

All the more reason to check those converter bolts. A loose converter usually makes noise in gear idling not in park, so your symtoms fit.

What if it rattles in park? Just noticed mine doing it tonight. At stoplights and just sitting in park. Probably heat shields?

i buddy of mine has a 90 firebird, makes the same noise....sounds like this could be a common problem, hopefully that would be the case and someone would be bound to have a explaination or way of stopping it

My Bird has developed a strange squeak/rattle too, mostly on warmup when the engine vibrates at a certain rpm, and coming to a stop, like a bad tranny or motor mount. Could also be a pulley--having it checked out next week.

The way to tell if it is a pulley is to use a socket wrench and crank back on your idle tensioner--holds the 'do nothing' pulley on your serpentine belt (there's a square hole on it to fit a socket wrench end, 1/4" I think ) then try starting the car without the belt and listen. Don't run it for long though, because you have no water pump, etc. * Also, try this at your own risk, as a mechanic told me to try this, but I have not done it. Makes sense, but again, you'll have no water pump, or alternator, etc. *If anyone thinks this is an extremely bad idea please say.*

Also, the idle tensioner itself will rattle like hell when worn, cheap to replace. Good luck, and I will post when I find out what my weird noise is.

I had a rattle in the front end of the transmission, flexplate, torque converter area of my GMC Jimmy for about 3,000 miles before the rear main bearing in the 2.8 spun. I put a rebuilt 3.1 into it. The noise was still there. One week and 400 miles later, the transmission's pump croaked. No line pressure at all.

i dont know about everyone else but mine sounds like its coming from the exhaust on the passenger side, like somethin is hitting, it gets real bad then i just give it a little gas and hold it at ~650-700rpm and it goes away... but besides that everything runs great
