can you make a timing mark? some timing and gear questions

hey guys i recently put my 87 formula on the road due to lack of another functional car.." i say this loosly" ok i swaped my old thin harmonic balancer that would vibrate the car alot, and put on a balancer from a 85 TA with a tired 305 4bbl. my timing marks do not line up. can you put a timing mark where it needs to be?if so how? also my car originally had a 305 4bbl with auto 4 spd. and i swapped to pre 76' 350 and a 4 speed.. i think my car has something like 2.80 gears in the rear but seems like whenever i try to get rollin in 1st i get a octane ping..? also my car will start up great in the cold and will fire up quickly within the first 5 minutes of shutting it off but if i wait 10 minutes or more it takes a good minute to get her to barely catch idle and bring itself back to life...i was thinking when the car is hot the fuel evaporates and it takes a while to pump it in again? sound crazy...?also my first gear seems really huge and i know 4 spds. arent the top choice but what gears should i be the happiest with for fast street use..anyone know any good chevy shops in nj central nj..someone to tune my motor to perfection...thanks alot guys. i trust this site more than any mechanic

timing tape, if you don't know where the mark needs to be you'd have to find TDC befroe you use the tape. guess you could make a mark with a piece of chalk, soap stone, or paint.

you have a timing tab on your timing cover right? make a mark on your balancer to match the zero mark on the timing tab.
