I'm using 10/30 quaker state and I am going to change. I talked with a guy that does dirt track racing and he said it is horrible for high performance engines, at the moment with current mods and vortec supercharger i'm making 455hp 422ftlbs at 5,100rpm

If you know the bearing clearances you can add that to the equasion to make a better choice. Large bearing clearances need more oil(thicker) Opposite is true for tight clearances. My rods are at .0018 and I use 10-30 in summer and 5-30 in the cold weather. My last motor had .025 on the rods. I used 20-50 in summer and 10-40 in the cold weather. Just an example but you get the idea.

Any body partial or impartial to Castrol or Castrol Syntec? Or am I just that out of it...

Sooooooo.......... I'm better off with Mobil 1 or let me guess... Do a search...
amsoil 100%
plus its a true 100% synthetic not like mobil1 which is just a full synthetic..not bashing mobil1..it is a great product but i prefer amsoil versus anything..i use it in dirt racing and run it in my truck and car for daily drivers...you engine will run a whole lot better..

If you do a lot of high rpm stuff too, its good to run a thinner oil that will get to the top-end faster, and when in the high revs where oil is flung up there pretty quickly...it will drain back down faster.
I'm running 5W30 Valvoline synthetic...I usually run Mobil 1, but the Valvoline was cheaper this time around. And I rev my motor to over 6,000 rpms very frequently...so I like my oil a tad on the thin side.

If you do a search you will find that the 3 best are:
Mobil 1
Amsoil
Royal Purple
Next best,
Other "synthetics" like (Castrol syntec, etc,) that are not "pure" synthetics.
and "dino" oil is last.

The brands listed above are pretty much the standard...Mobil-1 and Amsoil being well proven in Chevy V-8 engines.
Choosing viscosity depends on your useage. I run Mobil-1 15W-50 in my LS1 during the Summer when I'm on the track at least once a month. My used oil analysis results are posted on bobistheoilguy.com and they show even a tight-clearance LS1 likes the thick stuff under some conditions.
The only oil not mentioned above that I use is Castrol Syntec 0W-30 'Made in Germany' stuff...also known as GC (German Castrol). I use this in my LS1 before and after track season, and in my 4.8L Silverado.
Can't say it's any better or worse than Mobil-1 or Amsoil 5W-30, but the 4.8L is noticeably quieter on cold startup and warmup with GC.

So Castrol Syntec 5W50 is not a good idea... I should think more in the world of Mobil 1 or Amsoil? Sounds reasonable...
How about that "Prolong" stuff not worth it? (probably gonna get flamed now...)

Additives are generally a waste of $$, especially if you're using a top-shelf oil like Amsoil or Mobil-1.
Only one I've seen that might merit testing is Torco MPZ...snotload of Molybdenum and whatnot. Truthfully even that's probably wasted given the oil analysis data I've gotten using Mobil-1 15W-50 during the warm months.

i ran it in my truck before the engine went dead...works great for worn engines..stuff is thicker than honey....and have had a few engine builders near by say that it wouldnt be a good idea to run it for long..think about it being so thick and you poor oil pump trying to push that junk around..plus the oil valleys and passages wonder if they could get plugged up from it being to thick...

I was reading somewhere that said if you run the engine hard a lot to run a thicker oil, like 20/50.

TOTAL CRAP.
ever see the little "egg beater" display in the parts store?
turn it around so you can see the oil
note the color of each
whip the handle around a few times.. nice and fast.
now look at the color again..
the oil with the additive is a lighter color.
why?
because its fill of AIR BUBBLES.... it makes the oil aerate really easily.

I have been following it to, I wouldn't call it flamed. I think the main issue they have is that it is changing viscosity. Started at 30 weight and slowly progressed to 40-50 weight by the end of 12000 miles.

What order you put them in is a matter of personal opinion/taste, and perhaps application.
If ease of availability is a major factor in your ranking, then M1 is pretty much the hands-down champ. However, that doesn't happen to be so high on my list.
For having a complete line of premium quality automotive lubrication and filtration products, you can't beat AMSOIL, IMO.

Well, Morgan is a pretty good racer, too...

Still better than Category 4 synthetics, or petroleum-based lubes. And, to be preferred over them for the application in question.
I do agree with you, though...
