How do you remove the distributor?

I need to remove my destributor so I can change the pickup coil. It tested infinite between the two leads. I have never pulled a distributor before and my Hanes isn't very clear. Any tips would be greatly appriciated.

It's held in by 1 bolt. Take the bolt out, disconnect the wires, and pull it straight up. That's it. Be sure to mark which way the rotor was pointing.

You don't need to remove the distributor to replace your coil.

The coil is located in the top portion of your HEI distributor cap under a black cover, and the cover is held on by two 1/4" hex head screws.

First, remove the two connectors that connect to the coil leads at the top edge of the distributor cap. Then remove your distributor cap which is held on by four twist-lock screws at the base of the cap. Once you have the cap off, then remove the two 1/4" hex head bolts and then pop off the cover. You'll see your coil under that cover.

Crap...I thought you were talking about the Ignition coil. Just to be sure, Just as TomP is asking, look at these links...

First, an HEI pickup coil: http://www.autoweb.lycos.com/garage/subsys/09-23d.htm

Now, an HEI ignition coil: http://www.autoweb.lycos.com/garage/subsys/09-26d.htm

Hope this helps.

To change the pick up coil I think you have take the distributor out and then remove the gear at the bottom and pull the shaft to get at it.

Thanks for the help guys. I was talking about the pickup coil, not ignitition coil. What is the deal with the vacume advance in that picture of the pickup. I am not supposed to have one, right?

Arnold,

Give us the stats on your car. Is it a factory setup?

I am thinking since you aren't seeing a vacuum advance on your distributor, you have a computer controlled distributor (electrical advance).

Yes, it's the factory distributor, so I think it has the electronic advance. Does anybody know exactly how that works? I think I could understand how a vacume advance works, but not that. Oh, I got the distributor pulled. Man, that bolt was a bitch to get out though.:-) Thanks for the help. ~ Arnold
