will start but wont stay running at all
my car will turn over but will not idle at all unless I keep my foot on the gas. It wont rev over 1,000 rpm and I smell unburned gas when I stand by the hood. Do you think it is my fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump? Which one should I check first? This is not the original motor but a 350. not sure exactly what it came fout of. It has centerbolt heads so I assume 1987-1995 if that helps. thanks for your help.

I would check the choke first.
It didn't have a fuel pressure regulator from the factory - if it has one, somebody added it. The only way it could be a fuel pump problem is if the carb is flooding, and if the carb is flooding, it might not be the fuel pump's fault.
