Does the Ignition Coil need to be Grounded?

I replaced my ignition coil recently. Rather than dealing with removing the rivets on the old coil so I could mount the new one, I just have the new one dangling by the wires. (It is ziptied in place, though, so I don't lose it going down the road). Besides looking ghetto, is there any problem with this? Does the coil need to be grounded at all?

I really don't know the V6 setups at all, but if it is a coil-in-cap design like the V8's, the coil has a metal ground strap that grounds the coil. In otherwords, no, there is no actual ground wire that you have to hook up.

Technically, yes, it should be grounded. However, I have run coils many times "hanging from a ziptie" like you and never killed one. I never ran them for years on end like that, but over a period of months, never a problem.

On the ones Ive encountered, the coil is self contained in a plastic/resin housing and the iron core passes through that. I dont think there is any contact at all with the metal chassis of the coil.
