HELP! 120 for 1 injector??!!
Ok, this goes along with my post in the V6 board... the mechanic got my car running great, but the injector for the back cylinder on the drivers side doesn't always fire. The mech. says it'll destroy the cylinder if I don't get it replaced... he says the price for 1 injector is 120 something... HELP ME OUT!... I have half a mind to just take it back and buy a whole set and put them in myself... tell me about prices and suchs.
[EDIT] just found out what he told my dad... it was a magnet that makes the injector pulse is bad... some electronic BS... can any of you help me out? PLEASE!

A set of 8 Accell injectors in whatever size you like will run you about $260. 6 would be less. One should be nowhere near $120 unless the V6 uses some kinda super-special injector that I'm not familiar with.

He's probably getting a price on a GM OEM replacement, plus some markup as well.
My opinion would be to buy a set of aftermarket injectors, contact Rich at www.cruzinperformance.com, I got my set of 8 Accel's from him for around 200 and change.
You really should go ahead and replace them all if you can, if one is going south, the others may follow.

Are they the gray, kind of bulbous-looking 19 lb/hr Multec injectors? If so, get a set of 8 from some Mustang guy that's turfing his stock ones in favor of some 24 lb/hr ones or something, and get Rich to do his thing to the 6 best of them as the other post suggested. The Multec crap you probably have is such incredible garbage, you'd do better to just get rid of it. F*rd uses Denso units which are a far better piece. I just put a set of them in my wife's 91 Caddy 4.9, I couldn't believe the difference. I paid $30 for the parts, plus $80 to Rich.

Did you all see the edit though... this magnet piece that makes the injector pulse, is this part of the injector or a seprate part, educate me on this, I may still be able to call this 400 dollar excapade off...
I wanna save some cash and do it myself, but my dad agreed to go 50/50 on it with me, so I dunno. He's sceptical about the whole thing...

He's talking about the internals of the part.
It IS that costly, for the LABOR, to go into that area to swap that part.
The intake (it is sectioned) comes off.
Try to keep seeking the solution.
It's up to you, what that solution may be.
Good suggestions, tho, so far.

Rb83, he's got the old Bosch pintle-style injectors, like the V8 guys have. Good idea, though! Can Multec's be swapped for Bosch's, or will they not fit into the fuel rails?
Xeno, first, email Rich Jensen @ Cruzin' Performance, as was mentioned. He'll tell you the real deal. I had 6 injectors from a busted 2.8 V6; he cleaned & flow-tested & blueprinted them for less than the cost of 1 new injector! He's very helpful, he could probably tell you if your injector's savable.
In the meantime, go to a junkyard, and buy all 6 injectors from another 2.8. Put the injectors in your car. Send your injectors out to Rich. When they come back clean, put them back into your car. You should wind up with 6 cleaned injectors, and 5 (hopefully 6) spares, for less than the cost of what your mechanic wants.
Plus, I believe Rich keeps old, broken injectors lying around. He might be able to use the magnet (or whatever's busted inside the one bad guy) to fix your injector. Shoot him an e-mail or call him, his e-mail's at the website that 8Mike9 mentioned.
The set of cleaned injectors gave my V6 an extra boot in the butt- definately do it.

Too late, already forked over the cash. If I had more time and didn't need the car right away I would have done it myself probably, but oh well... it's back in my hands and running -much- better. It actually feels like I'm driving a Camaro now!
Labor was 209
Parts was 170 (10 bucks for a fuel filter!!, 38 for an intake set and 120 for the injector :mutter
Tax gas and change comes to 406.96
First paycheck gets the car a trans flush and a diff flush. After that... well, I don't wanna think that far ahead...

dude, you really need to get yourself a shop manual for the car, and a bag full of decent wrenches and stuff. I don't want to come down on you and say you made a bad decision, you had to do what you had to do. I did the same thing myself in the past, before I had the tools, knowledge and confidence to work on my own car.
Seriously, though, to someone fairly familiar with the workings of the typical GM fuel injection system replacing a set of injectors would only take a few hours. The cost savings... well, you can see what sort of cash you can save by doing this stuff yourself. I'm just trying to recommend that as a big way to save money on cars in the future, you need to learn to do this stuff yourself. The investment of your time would pay off big in the future. It really isn't that difficult... hell, even I can do it and I've got the IQ of a turnip.
