Timing Chain Snapped!!!!!!!

Well today i had a good mechanic come over, and we came to conclusion that my chain neeeded replaced, but at the time it wasn't broken yet... so i replaced all ignition components, it had cracked wires, fouled plugs and a bad rotor....

once i got that done, i started the car, it started right up, and wamm, i heard a click and all the sudden the top end rockers stopped moving, yes i had the valve covers off, so now i have 3 pushrods bent.....

I sure hope the valves are still good....

You're just now replacing cracked wires, fouled plugs and a bad rotor? How long has it been broke down now? Basic tune-up stuff? ...and the chain just broke like that? You didn't have something fubar'ed on the distributor did ya?

You probably dinged a couple valves, too. That's why snapping a chain is such a bad thing to have happen. Take it one step at a time. Replace the chain and the bent pushrods. Then cross your fingers and turn the key. If it runs "dead" on a few cylinders don't freak just yet recheck the adjustment on the rockers where you replaced the pushrods- you might just have adjusted them wrong when you replaced the pushrods. If it STILL runs rough after you get the adjustment set properly THEN you can freak out, becuause it's probably a bent valve or two.

Sorry to hear about that, by the way.

My suggestion is to do a pressure test on each cyl to see if any valves are bent before installing a timing chain.
There could be a terminal condition in your block, and it would be a waste to install a timing chain if that were so.

Absolutely... simple to do while you have those fouled spark plugs and pushrods out of the block...

Hmmn, my memory may be fading, but I don't think the valve can hit the pistons on a SBC unless the keepers come off.

Oh it can if the cam is holding valves open and the crank is still spinning.

Another thing that might have happened is that the camshaft broke.
He had the dist out, and possibly when he reinstalled it something wasn't right, and something locked up back there while the engine was running... And SNAP!

If the vave covers are off look at the springs with the rokers off and see if any springs are lower than the others. If so you got them if not run a leak down test to double check.

iunno. I think the car had enough and commited suicide. Maybe it was allergic to fur.

How do you know three pushrods are bent. Seems odd. Which three? Did the dizzy pop out? What was it out for? Is this the cap and rotor that was 'installed' months ago? Man is there a list I could go on, but as has been asked WTF is the 'question'.

And IIRC a stock l98 is a non-interference motor. With the high miles on his I doubt that pressure would have killed hisvalves either. More like the dizzy was installed wrong, he started it way off and had some serious combustion issues. Maybe not.

And finally, iunno... You heard a 'click' and the rockers stopped moving. Think that may have had anything to do with the motor stopping?

Ok i got a double roller timing chain shortly after this, a guy came over aropund 7PM while i was at work, just got finished, and finito, the car started right up, non of my valves were bent, the pushrods were all replaced and the car runs great now..

The guy was my ex girlfriends father so he only charged me $150 but i had to pay for parts...

If wondering, i called a local performance motor shop and they wanted only $80 for the double roller timing chain and cover....so....

When will it end shane??????????

You were supposed to get those motors like 2 weeks ago, then it was going to be the day after christmas, then it was going to be the 30th, and now it will be in "a few days."

When will you stop this? Arent you going to move back to florida? I can hear the sigh of relief all the way across the midwest.

You paid $230 for a timing chain change? Damn. Either way, tis a shame the car works again. Erm, I mean congratulations. If you can get these 454 blocks just laying around, do you have any connections to make yourself useful and get me a free 350 roller block? eh, eh?

iunno, I thought he already moved back.
And sold those blocks.
And was going to rent his uncle's truck.
And already did the tune up.
And already ripped out the back seats to replace with a big wooden box.
And made cool 2x4 t-top holders.
And pressure washed his engine with 1200 psi.
And a headlight won't go down.
And his hatch doesn't go down.
And he wants to pump up his Sony Xplode.
And he wants to lower his car.
And wants to put on 4th gen SLP Firehawk rims.
And wants new heads for his 305.
And wants a 350.
And wants to install a 454.
And found an eaton s/c for $50.
And "saw some stupid black boy playing with the handles to my car and looking inside of it" and "almost got robbed"
And can't control adhesive distribution in his car.
And is his school's fount of automotive knowledge.
And is going to buy a "verticle door kit for $400" and install it and show us how it's done.
And is going to miniram his 305.
And he "went to tghe store today andbought some door lock and cylinder set" but could only install the drivers side.
And wants his thirdgen to pull the wheels off the ground.
And he has a spontaneously grown shift kit.
And his name is Michael and he spells it Sahne.
And thinks a meal at Denny's is a date.

Oh yea, And fur is in damnit!

Mikey, please, please, please stop the crap already.

look at the time stamps...

4pm EST 12-29 he post a problem

at ~11PM EST he says someone came over at 7pm and had it running at when he posted..

Does ~3 hours sound right to install a timing chain & adjusting the valves... especially with his skills (if he helped at all)?

I dont know man I can envision him being that person that walks in that doesnt know **** but will fight till he is blue in the face because someone else that supposedly knows about engines told him something.

I bet they dont have too much of a problem with him. At least they are making $$$ and keeping the economy going.

well.... he changed the timing set by taking out the radiator, and removing the water pump, and accessories, then he pulled the first two screw that hold the oil pan on, and thats how he did it, only took him 3 hours....

well.... he changed the timing set by taking out the radiator, and removing the water pump, and accessories, then he pulled the first two screw that hold the oil pan on, and thats how he did it, only took him 3 hours....
CLUE:
It's his former girlfriends dad who did the wrench twisting.

Here's what really happened.
Shane removed his dizzy (see previous post) and can't get it back together.
Car won't run right.
Calls former GFs dad for help.
"Help me, the timing chain's broke!"
The guy comes over, takes out the radiator, twists a few bolts, rearranges the plug wires the way they're supposed to be.
Puts radiator back in.
Puts new timing set in his toolbox.
3hrs later...Starts engine, washes hands, collects $150, gets in car, drives away.

Which former GFs dad did the work?
Did you have him flown up from Fla?
Or do you already have 5 girlfriends in Missouri??? After living there for only about a month.
