Is this a good deal on fuel pump replacment?

We all know that replacing the intake fuel pumps on our cars are the biggest PIA in the world. Mine just died for the 3rd time yesterday coming home from work. A shop that I do business with when I need work done is offering to drop the rear end, drop the exhaust, drop the tank, replace the pump and screen with dealer GM parts, put the tank back up, connect the rear, bleed the rear brakes, re-connect exhaust, and fill up the tank w/gas and to top it all off give me a life time warranty, that way if my car eats another pump, which it probably will, it will not cost me a dime. He wanted $834 to do it all including all tax, labor, parts, etc. I know if i had more time and my rent car was not costing me $30/day I would have liked to take the tank to a radiator shop, have them weld on a brass fuel hose fitting and hook up an external fuel pump. But my car is already at the shop and he will have it back to me tommorow afternoon. What do you guys think? Do you think its a good deal even with the life time warranty. The shop is awesome and they have always been good to me, plus they have been in business almost 30 years so they are not going anywhere. Im open to all opinions.

Thanks,
Jeff

Wow, $834? I'd rather drop the tank down 8 times myself than pay that once.

There's no need to bleed the brakes, unless you want him doing brake work. The axle just needs to be dropped down, aka "lowered down"- not removed- no brake line needs to be opened.

I'd wonder why you keep eating fuel pumps like that... do you run the tank down to almost-empty when you drive?

Running the tank dry is the usual thing that kills them, besides age.

The TV station I used to be Chief Engineer of had several F*rd E350 vans as live trucks... one of them (I believe it was a 96) had a problem repeatedly where the gas gauge would fail, and shortly afterward it would stop running. Each time, the fuel pump would come out crispy. The photogs would just jump in it and drive it, too lazy to put gas in it, and it would run out... 2 or 3 times of running the pump for a while with no fuel to cool it was all it could take. Fortunately since we had the power to majorly embarass the dealer, they did it under warranty every time. It was still a PITA to the station though because we'd be without a live truck for a couple of days each time. We finally made a rule that they weren't allowed to drive it at less than ¼ tank, they had to fill it up at that point. We went from 3 months per pump to 2 years on the last one, after which I left the station.

$800 bucks is a rip-off! You can get it done with QUALITY parts for about $300 and get at least a 1 year warranty to go with it.

Stock GM pumps should last for several years (mine lasted 7). For the work you are describing, you should be getting a new set of diff gears w/posi installed too.

Ouch, over $800 is a rip off. I just had someone replace mine yesterday for $240 using all ACDelco parts.

There is the option of dropping the tank, or cutting a hole in the floorboard and removing the pump that way.

Mine went out a couple years ago when I was 1000 mi. from home in Waterford NY, so I took it to a GM dealership, it only cost $425 for everything, all new AC Delco.

You dont need to drop the tank. Cut a hole in the floor and change the pump. Then put tabs on the peice you cut out and screw it back on and seal it with silicone sealant. Your cost will not be that much and the job is not that hard. Just cut the hole big enough.

Some people's time is more important than $$$ because of the time/money balance, so...

I suggest you buy a walbro pump and have someone install that. They were prolly using the cheapest pumps they could use for the 'last couple times' so they could gain more overhead off you and get'ch out the door. Ya just have to make sure the mech doesn't need a fp for his car at the time and ****** your pump and install more junk... Trust no-one but yourself!

An AC replacement is just about gold also.

The tank cost me $130 in labor to drop and replace the fuel pump. Since 99% of garages have a lift all they need to do is let the rear hang, unbolt the panhard rod, remove the muffler, loosen the driver sid strap, and remove the passenger side strap, let the tank hang sideways which will give enough access to remove the sending unit and replace the pump.

The reason I did not want to do it myself - I was a lazy bastard that week, and I changed the tranny and clutch the week prior.

Typical mechanic scam douschbag. I would let the BBB know or some kind of entity and prosecute this dousch for consumer fraud. If he thinks he needs to do all that labor, then he dosn't need to be working on your car. F!!CKING *****, give me the shops number and I'll confront them.
