you can check the pad stamped by the water pump for specific information on what vehicle it came in, but with out the crank its just a 4 inch bore block, it could be a 302 (i doubt) a 327 or a 350(most likely)

It's a 350 in all likelihood. All that number means is that it's a 4" large-journal block.

It doesn't matter what it originally came in; it's an extremely common 350 block from the 70s.

It's a 350, or at least should be. Nothing more, nothing less.

it would vary alot i would think the early early 70's block with 300+hp or the late 70s blocks with under 150hp

No telling.

It's 30 years old, more or less. Who knows what's left of how it came. It probably doesn't have the original pistons, heads, cam, carb, or anything else that determines how much power it makes.

It's a 350. If you want to know anything else, you're going to have to get piston numbers, head casting numbers, cam specs, etc.

Or, take it to the dyno; since "predicting" power output even from a complete list of parts is notoriously difficult to do accurately. It makes however much power it makes: no more, no less.

It's a 350 High Nickel (sp) block., .010 on the end indicates it is.

The block really doesn't have a horsepower rating.
The heads/intake/cam installed set the power rating.

There is a pad on the block just in front of the passenger side head that has some numbers on it that tells exactly what vehicle it was installed in.
It's HARD to see and if the block has ever been decked the number was removed during the decking process.

010 is the last 3 digits of the casting number 3970010. It has nothing directly to do with nickel content. Although, many blocks with that casting number, since they were in trucks alot of the time, did get the better alloys.

None of which has anything to do with how much power it puts out.

If it had come in a 2-barrel application, truck or otherwise, it would have put out around 165 HP new; if it was a 4-barrel, maybe 180 HP.

If it's an 010 block it could also bea 4bolt main. I've never seen a 4 bolt that wasn't a "010" block, BUT, I have seen some "010" blocks that weren't 4 bolt main. Large journal that is.

I have built countless 350s out of 3970010 blocks. About 25% of them, give or take, had 4-bolt caps.

The casting number does not contain information about which main caps were installed.

All 3970010 blocks are large-journal. The casting number does contain that information.

You gotta take it apart and look if you want to know which caps are on it.

Lots of blocks with factory-installed 4-bolt main caps on the center 3 journals are not the 3970010 casting. There are numerous other ones (the later roller ones for instance) that have other casting numbers.
