Changing oil pan gasket....what NOT to do.
Had to pull oil pan to get remnants of an 'emergency plug' that broke, out.
Pulled oil pan (lots of fun what with pulling headers, starter, plugs...
Put on new oil pan gasket after cleaning oil pan out and getting a new plug for it...and put oil pan back on. Started leaking oil immediately from the rear half moon...near the top of it.
Pulled the oil pan AGAIN.....couple of days later.
This time, realized there were 2 little metal rings on the studs on the rear corners. Pulled them off and checked with a mechanic friend.. He said they were 'anti-crush' rings to make sure you don't over tighten on the gasket. Checked gasket #2 we had just pulled off . It was not missing any of the anti-crush rings. MUST have been from the first gasket we pulled.
Lesson here....make sure you don't have any anti-crush rings left on the block when you go to put the new gasket and oil pan back on.
